After Sheikh Hasina’s fall in August last year, discussions about reform, the election and a possible referendum quickly spread through political circles and the media. At the same time, false or misleading information on these issues began circulating on social media.
Between Oct. 1 and Nov. 15, eight Bangladesh-focused fact-checking organizations debunked 57 unique election-related false claims. The first half of the current quarter saw nearly three times more election related misinformation than the entire third quarter.
During this period, the largest share of false narratives involved fabricated statements and fake quotes attributed to government officials and leaders of various political parties. Other claims promoted nonexistent surveys to push misleading narratives about party popularity and election prospects. |
