The use of AI-generated content to spread misinformation has been steadily growing in Bangladesh, but the second quarter of 2025 broke all previous records, with synthetic videos used in political campaign ahead of the national election. Misinformation related to global events also surged, rising from 1% to 19%, fueled by the Iran-Israel conflict and heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
Fake 'Anonymous' network: a trap of conspiracies, predictions, and misinformation
A coordinated network is impersonating the “Anonymous” hacktivist movement, mimicking its aesthetics to spread conspiracies and dramatic predictions. They also use stolen content from public figures to gain credibility and have been found sharing outright disinformation. Operated mostly from Nigeria, these pages falsely claimed to foresee Bangladesh’s deadly plane crash, gaining massive reach overnight. But behind the masks lies a profit scheme: selling fixed-game betting tickets by exploiting fear, tragedy, and the illusion of secret knowledge.
